PERFORMANCE ART NOW! @ BIENNIAL PAVILLION
JULY 18TH, 2015

Picture
Date: July 18, 2015
Time: 12 - 4 PM
Location: Biennial Pavillion
1550 Wewatta at 16th and Wewatta

In collaboration with the Biennial of the Americas and RedLine, artists’ Theresa Anderson and Justin Beard organized a program of performance art that explores the conversations, styles and concepts that are circulating within contemporary performance art practice (Performance Art Now!). Drawing particularly from the professional and practicing performance artists & groups in the Denver Metro area, this indoor/outdoor convergence of performance art serves as a “living” installation to be programmed the first Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 12 – 4PM at the Biennial of the Americas Pavilion.

From solo to collaborative presentations the work represented in Performance Art Now! reflects interdisciplinary methods of contemporary art production that include parenting, labor, housing, gender, dating rituals, relationships, media saturation, and networked identity.

Artists:
Jared David Paul Anderson, Theresa Anderson, Justin Beard, ESC, David D’ Agostino, Noah Phillips and Aurora Lord, Porscha' Danielle, Kalindi Delaney DeFrancis, Liz Greene, Esther Hernandez, Jiah Shin and Olivia McLean, Impromptu Company, dylan scholinski, Tracy Tomko and Brenda LaBier

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING WHAT I AM PLANNING TO SHOW

Picture
artist: dylan scholinski
an empathy project
empathy produces a total travesty if it doesn’t unravel the nature of the outsider’s presence

the concepts -

for nobody knows i’m trans*
participants to wear printed nobody knows i’m trans* t-shirts and hand out mini-zines

“it is my hope to widen the opportunities for others to question their own identities while also normalizing trans* identities by providing the space for all people/trans to feel empowered, to increase support and compassion in community. use abstracted props to create a communal experience that heightens awareness of the strength and fragility of community.”

for why won’t you play with me?
playing catch in open and often forbidden spaces

“i hope to examine play as sacred, covered, structured, planned and limited - from the idea that as children we begin to play and are open... then pretty quickly the phrases like “no”, “not inside”, “not right now”, “that’s not how it’s done”, ‘“let me show you”, or “ that is not how a girl/boy does it”, and so on… trickle in and change everything. we become afraid of play - embarrassed, uncomfortable, anxious, and hidden. With this piece i want to show how obvious and harmful this practice is to us all.”

the action-
participants will wear printed nobody knows i’m trans* t-shirts, hand out zines,
and play catch with each other with a variety of balls in and around the space.

THIS FRIDAY - Matters of the (Female) Flesh: Musings on Form and Meaning

Matters of the (Female) Flesh: Musings on Form and Meaning

Date: Friday, April 18, 2014
Time: 7-8:30 pm
Cost: $10 program admission, $5 members

As part of the She Crossed the Line program series, Matters of the (Female) Flesh: Musings on Form and Meaning will offer audiences 3 unique perspectives on Chen Man's highly provocative photographs of contemporary Chinese women. The photographs are part of Chen Man's current solo show at RedLine (first solo show in the U.S.) entitled "A New Attitude" curated by Dr. Julie Segraves.

Chen Man’s artwork presents images of contemporary Chinese women: models and pin-up girls, goddesses and icons, look-alikes and everyday women. Some were produced for major Chinese magazines, others created as advertisements for makeup companies, still others spring from Chen Man’s own past and current fascinations. All the images in this exhibition offer lush portraits of these women, vibrating with physicality and presence, presenting perfection to be admired, sought after and deconstructed.

The three perspectives will emerge as three mini-events, which will explore how Chen Man represents the female body her work. The speakers of the mini-events include:

Cori Wong, Ph. D. (Philosophical Practioner and Consultant) http://coriwong.com/

Mark Sink (Photographer and Resource Artist at RedLine)http://redlineart.org/art/resource-artists/mark-sink.html

Dylan Scholinski (Founder of sentimental studios and Resident Artist at RedLine) http://redlineart.org/art/resident-artists/dylan-scholinski.html

Felony Misdemeanor (Drag Queen performer par excellance) https://twitter.com/FelonyM

Matters of the (Female) Flesh is part of She Crossed the Line, a year-long series of exhibitions and dialogues focused on trail-blazing women artists and community leaders, presented by RedLine and RBC Wealth Management.

dear all,

many of you know that seven years ago (yesterday) one of my best friends successfully took his own life ... and while i can still feel him in my day to day - my sweet dear Edward - the years still don't leave me loving or missing you any less than I did back then.

please take time to love your people while they are here and remember them after they have moved on.

love forever, dylan

a brief artist statement:

In the past I have often found the center of much of my creative practice to be in creating and developing autobiographically transparent, emotional, and honest artwork that often deals with some level of suffering, emptiness, and humor. In addition, I have found a personal, spiritual, as well as creative practice involving the aesthetics of Wabi-sabi – a comprehensive Japanese aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection while finding the importance, value, and beauty in all that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Characteristics of much of my work include: asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the limitless integrity of natural objects, emotions, and processes. While historically I have attempted to keep these practices separate – over time it has become apparent to me that there is no separation. In my more recent work I have been attempting to unite these practices, as well as these parts of myself. Nurturing all that I believe to be authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect – while realizing at the very same time – that everything lasts, everything is finished, and everything is perfect.

DECEMBER PROJECT:
surviving the holidays with the trans community
Picture
DETAIL of title - survival (closet) artist - clara thorsen a submission to haven - sent(a)mental studios youth art collection on 11/17/12 " ... inside is a walk-through of the process i took to realizing myself. I used this closet as a catalyst for me coming out to my mom. " (c) sent(a)mental studios
By JENNIFER FINNEY BOYLAN | Published: DECEMBER 1, 2012

I wanted to announce what we’re calling THE DECEMBER PROJECT, a reachout by Dylan Scholinski, Mara Keisling, Jennifer Finney Boylan, and Helen Boyd to raise the spirits of people in the trans community during what can be a difficult time of year.

We are trans activists, homebodies, authors, parents, spouses, artists, and teachers, including a trans man, two trans women, and a loving spouse.  Here’s our pledge to you: If you feel low this December, and need someone to talk to, contact us, and we’ll call you on the phone.  Period.

We want to make clear that we are not therapists, and that anyone in a serious crisis should dial 911, or seek professional help from qualified folks in the helping professions.

On the other hand we are people who may have experienced what you are feeling, and it is our hope that simply having someone to listen or talk to this December will have value.   This project is 100% free and no one involved in it is getting anything out of it other than the opportunity to help.

Trans people– and the people that love them– face unique challenges during the holidays.  Too often we can find ourselves separated from families, from spouses and children and parents.  It’s a time of year that, as Dickens well noted, can be the most haunted of all, a time when we travel in time and feel all too keenly the distance between ourselves and others, when what we most desire is warmth, and community, and love.

So think of us as friends you haven’t met yet.  Want to talk to somebody on the phone?  Here’s what to do: 1) send an email to Jenny Boylan at [email protected], and in the subject heading write, DECEMBER PROJECT.  List your name, your phone number, and the time when we can reach you–preferably with a few different choices.  Let us know which one of us you want to talk to.

You can also contact people directly through Facebook  – ask to “friend” Jennifer Finney Boylan and then make your request through the Direct Message page, and JFB will forward your request to the person you’ve asked for. (or if you’re friends with Mara, or Helen, or Dylan, you can contact them directly too.)

If we can’t reach you, or if the person you’ve requested isn’t available, we’ll let you know that too.  Also, if we get overwhelmed, we’ll also tell you that.

So let us help.  And you don’t need to be in trouble to participate in the December Project.  If you want to celebrate all the good things in your life and share your sense of joy– we’re good with that too.

Who we are:

Helen Boyd is an author of 2 books, including MY HUSBAND BETTY, an account of life with a trans spouse.  She is a well regarded spokeswoman for trans people and the people that love them, especially spouses and partners.  She’s a Lecturer in Gender and Freshman Studies at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

Jennifer Finney Boylan, an author of 13 books including SHE’S NOT THERE: A LIFE IN TWO GENDERS.  An English teacher at Colby College in Maine, a trans woman, wife to Deirdre Boylan, and mother (or “Maddy”) to two fine young men, Zach and Sean.  Serves on the board of directors of GLAAD and on the board of trustees at the Kinsey Institute.

Mara Keisling is founding executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality.  She is well known as a commentator on trans issues; she lives in Washington DC.

Dylan Scholinski was born Daphne Scholinski. He currently lives in Boulder, CO with his beautiful wife and 4 year old son and is the Founder/Witness of Sent(a)Mental Studios as well as a distinguished artist, author and public speaker. His most recent book was The Last Time I Wore a Dress, listed by Out Magazine as one of its Top Ten Must Reads.
