the patient/artist invites current practicing and/or students, therapists, educators, family, friends, and social workers to take advantage of his 30+ years of experience as a "client". some areas of expertise based in his personal experiences include Institutionalization, Depression, Gender Identity Disorder, PTSD, Homelessness, Major Affective Disorder, Gender Dysphoria, Conduct Disorder, Borderline Personality, Suicidal Ideations and Mania. the patient/artist also speaks to issues of queer identities, class issues and poverty, accessing healthcare without insurance, domestic violence, chemical dependency and recovery, suicide prevention and bullying, youth issues, and much more. there will only be 3 - 50 minute appointments available per 72 HOUR HOLD. these slots are available on a first come first serve basis or by lottery if there are too man responses. upon completion of the appointment if the patient/artist  deems the "provider" to be a safe person to work with they will certify them as such.

"Providers" will be charged on a sliding scale ranging from $5 to $180 for an appointment with the patient/artist - payable in advance. All appointments will take place in the 72 HOUR HOLD room and will be recorded - however, providers will be able to choose if recorded by audio, video, or both - but must choose one form of documentation.

72 HOUR HOLD
a large scale installation and performance piece by patient/artist dylan scholinski – developed in response to the quote “the patient has no sense of home” from the personal hospital chart from when dylan was institutionalized as a teenager - beginning with building and re-creating a hospital psychiatric seclusion room – and once built and painted white the patient/artist will live in the space for 5 periods of  72 HOURS during the NOT EXACTLY exhibition.

mediums: walls, time, wood, white paint, vinyl, twin mattress, sheets, blanket, patient/artist, pajamas, towel, toiletries

during each 72 HOUR HOLD -
*the patient/artist will live mainly in the 72 HOUR HOLD room with a few exceptions (mainly free to go to the restroom or other scheduled activities)

*all activity in the 72 HOUR HOLD room will be under 24/7 video/web surveillance 

*the patient/artist  will be allowed to draw, erase, write, sleep, read, exercise, photograph, etc. 

*the patient/artist will go for 3 - 1/2 hour walks per 24 hour period – occasionally outside.

*the patient/artist will be available for shared visiting hours from 11am-1pm and 3-5pm and shared meals (bring your own) at 11:30am and 4:30pm

72 HOUR HOLD are currently scheduled for:
Friday May 31st at 10am - Monday June 3rd at 10am
Tuesday June 11th at 7pm - Friday June 14th at 7pm
Thursday June 27th at 10am - Sunday June 30th at 10am

AFTER-WARDS: possible side effects include
the pieces and interactions that happen in relation to and within the time and space of the patient/artist and the 72 HOUR HOLD room.

mediums: charcoal, erasers, blue tape, foam cups, canvas boards, pencils, wood, hospital records, string, seclusion room, food, the patient/artist, video, performance, tears, visitors, books, cameras … and other unforeseen materials.

a live webcast and recordings the patient/artist while  in the 72 HOUR HOLD room.

the patient/artist will turn a foam cup inside out at random times – this practice comes from a skill acquired, usually following snacks or meals, during the patient/artists time in mental institutions.

the patient/artist will be available for "hugs" when present during REDLINE open hours and events - via a clearly marked buzzer outside of the 72 HOUR HOLD room - the patient/artist will stop what they are doing – and the viewer may enter the room for a hug -  and then exit the room and the patient/artist will resume what he was doing.

a copy of the complete record of over 2 years of free association notes, given by the patient/artist, from the ages of 16-18 at the Constance Bultman Wilson Center in Faribault, Minnesota and recorded by 2 therapists. c. 1982 - 1984 

**in 1993 the copy was altered by adding hand imagery - and then bound and stored until now.

a brief artist statement:

In the past I have often found the center of much of my creative practice to be in creating and developing autobiographically transparent, emotional, and honest artwork that often deals with some level of suffering, emptiness, and humor. In addition, I have found a personal, spiritual, as well as creative practice involving the aesthetics of Wabi-sabi – a comprehensive Japanese aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection while finding the importance, value, and beauty in all that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Characteristics of much of my work include: asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the limitless integrity of natural objects, emotions, and processes. While historically I have attempted to keep these practices separate – over time it has become apparent to me that there is no separation. In my more recent work I have been attempting to unite these practices, as well as these parts of myself. Nurturing all that I believe to be authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect – while realizing at the very same time – that everything lasts, everything is finished, and everything is perfect.
