Matters of the (Female) Flesh: Musings on Form and Meaning

Date: Friday, April 18, 2014
Time: 7-8:30 pm
Cost: $10 program admission, $5 members

As part of the She Crossed the Line program series, Matters of the (Female) Flesh: Musings on Form and Meaning will offer audiences 3 unique perspectives on Chen Man's highly provocative photographs of contemporary Chinese women. The photographs are part of Chen Man's current solo show at RedLine (first solo show in the U.S.) entitled "A New Attitude" curated by Dr. Julie Segraves.

Chen Man’s artwork presents images of contemporary Chinese women: models and pin-up girls, goddesses and icons, look-alikes and everyday women. Some were produced for major Chinese magazines, others created as advertisements for makeup companies, still others spring from Chen Man’s own past and current fascinations. All the images in this exhibition offer lush portraits of these women, vibrating with physicality and presence, presenting perfection to be admired, sought after and deconstructed.

The three perspectives will emerge as three mini-events, which will explore how Chen Man represents the female body her work. The speakers of the mini-events include:

Cori Wong, Ph. D. (Philosophical Practioner and Consultant) http://coriwong.com/

Mark Sink (Photographer and Resource Artist at RedLine)http://redlineart.org/art/resource-artists/mark-sink.html

Dylan Scholinski (Founder of sentimental studios and Resident Artist at RedLine) http://redlineart.org/art/resident-artists/dylan-scholinski.html

Felony Misdemeanor (Drag Queen performer par excellance) https://twitter.com/FelonyM

Matters of the (Female) Flesh is part of She Crossed the Line, a year-long series of exhibitions and dialogues focused on trail-blazing women artists and community leaders, presented by RedLine and RBC Wealth Management.
